"Cliffhanger" Program

Custom Re-vegetation of Bluffs, Hillsides and River Property

-- To help prevent erosion and improve stability --

For Bluffs, Cliffs & Hillsides

A "Cliffhanger" project in progress.

A bluff on beautiful view property on Camano Island experiences continual erosion, which has diminished the yard size over time.

Also, wind blows sand up off the cliff face onto the property.

THE PLAN

The Cliffhanger plan for this property is to install vegetation on the top and on the face, supported by a grid netting, to help with erosion control;

and to install larger trees at the base of the cliff both for erosion control and to help lessen the wind/sand.

It is possible to view this project, and one next door, by appointment.

This job is shown from start to finish in the photos below.

Step 1: Site Preparation

The first step is to cut back some of the vegetation and clean-up the area to prepare for the grid and planting. We preserve the existing vegetation--the more vegetation the better.

Step 2: Grid Installation

Then the "grid" is intalled. The grid is held both by large stakes and by the plants themselves. As the plants become established, both the grid and the plants are strengthened.

Grid Installation (Cont.)

Homeowners review the grid. There are several types of grid that can be used, depending on conditions and the wishes of the property owners. Also, sometimes the grid only goes a short distance down the face--so the plantings are on top and at the bottom. This cuts down on the time and expense of the project.

Step 3: Planting

One gallon and two gallon plants for the bluff face. On this project we used 150 plants and trees.

Planting (Con't.)

These beautiful Vine Maple were grown at our Snohomish nursery tree farm. They will go at the base of the bluff for erosion control and to block the wind that sweeps up. Naturally, be bigger they are the better they will be at this; so we like to start with a good-sized tree.

Planting (Cont.)

Smaller plants are used in the grid on the face; wind-lessening trees below.

Step 4: Irrigation

For Spring/Summer projects, we install a temporary irrigation system. You can see the black "main line" in the photo--this hooks into a garden hose; and off of the main line come "spaghetti lines" with sprayers to each individual plant.

Finished !

This shows all the components of a Cliffhanger Project--the grid installed on top and down the cliff-side; plants installed in the grid and wind-lessening trees at the bottom, and the irrigation installed. The final step is cleaning up after ourselves.
